We believe knowing your rights and having evidence-preservation tools should never be behind a paywall. CopDefender is funded by supporters who believe in police accountability and civil liberties.

Video segments are stored on encrypted cloud servers. Each segment is SHA-256 hashed before upload, ensuring tamper-proof integrity. Your encryption keys are generated and stored only on your device — we use a zero-knowledge architecture, which means even our own team cannot access your footage. You can download or permanently delete your recordings at any time.

Yes. The First Amendment protects your right to record police officers performing their duties in public. This has been upheld by multiple federal circuit courts. However, recording laws vary by state — some states are "one-party consent" (you can record without telling anyone) and some are "two-party consent" (all parties must consent). This is exactly why CopDefender uses segmented cloud backup. Every 3 seconds, a new video segment is encrypted and uploaded to cloud servers. If your phone is confiscated, turned off, or destroyed, the segments that already uploaded are safely stored and accessible from any device you log into. Most of your encounter will be preserved even in the worst-case scenario.

Yes. All rights data, legal information, scenario guides, and emergency protocols are stored locally on your device and work completely offline. Video recording also works offline — segments are saved to a local upload queue and automatically uploaded when internet connection returns. The only feature that requires internet is real-time cloud backup, but the app gracefully handles connectivity loss.

CopDefender recordings are designed to be court-admissible. Each video segment includes SHA-256 hash verification, GPS coordinates, and precise timestamps — creating a tamper-proof chain of custody. The hash proves the footage has not been altered since recording. Many attorneys in our directory have successfully used CopDefender recordings as evidence in civil rights cases, traffic disputes, and excessive force complaints.

The CopDefender app itself is under 50 MB. Video recordings are stored both locally and in the cloud. A typical 10-minute recording uses approximately 150-200 MB of local storage. Once segments are confirmed uploaded to the cloud, you can free local storage by clearing synced segments from within the app. Cloud storage is unlimited for all users.

CopDefender collects the absolute minimum data needed to function: your GPS location (for the legal engine and emergency alerts), your emergency contacts (stored on-device only), and your encrypted video segments (for cloud backup). We do not collect analytics, browsing behavior, personal identifiers, device fingerprints, or any data that could be sold to third parties. We have no advertising SDK, no tracking pixels, and no data broker relationships. Period.

Generally, no. Your First Amendment right to record police in public spaces has been upheld by courts across the country, including Glik v. Cunniffe (1st Circuit, 2011), Turner v. Lieutenant Driver (5th Circuit, 2017), and Fields v. City of Philadelphia (3rd Circuit, 2017). Police cannot legally order you to stop recording unless your recording physically interferes with their duties. Even then, the bar for "interference" is very high. CopDefender's background cloud upload ensures your footage is preserved even if you are ordered to put your phone away.

CopDefender is available for iOS (iPhone 8 and later, iOS 15+) and Android (Android 10 and later). The app is built with React Native via Expo, ensuring consistent performance across both platforms. All features — recording, cloud backup, legal engine, attorney directory, scenario training — work identically on both iOS and Android.
